The Local SEO Checklist Every Small Business Owner Should Print Out
Ranking on Google Maps isn't magic — it's a checklist. We've built hundreds of local sites. These are the 12 things that actually move the needle for small businesses.
Local SEO isn't complicated. It's just a checklist most people skip.
Every local business owner wants to rank higher on Google. Most of them have heard about "SEO" and assume it's some mystical thing that requires an agency retainer and months of patience. It's not. The fundamentals of local SEO are knowable, actionable, and most of them are free.
Here are the 12 things we check on every site we build.
Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your listing. If you haven't done this, stop reading and do it now. It's free and it's the foundation of everything.
- Choose the right primary category. "HVAC Contractor" beats "Contractor." Specificity wins.
- Add every service you offer. Google uses this to match you to searches. Don't leave services blank.
- Post updates at least twice a month. Google treats active profiles as more trustworthy.
- Reply to every review. Both good and bad. Businesses that engage with reviews rank higher.
On-site fundamentals
- Your city + service in the page title and H1. "Pittsburgh HVAC Repair" in your title tag is worth more than any backlink strategy.
- NAP consistency. Name, Address, Phone — exactly the same everywhere. If Google finds inconsistencies, it ranks you lower.
- Local schema markup. This is JSON-LD code that tells Google your business type, address, hours, and phone. We add this to every site we build.
- A dedicated page for each service + city. "Pittsburgh furnace repair" and "Cranberry Township AC installation" should be separate pages if you want to rank for both.
Reviews and citations
- Get to 10+ Google reviews. Below 10, you're invisible in Maps. Above 10, you start competing. Above 50, you start winning.
- List on the major citation sites. Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and your industry's top directories (Angi, HomeAdvisor, etc.). Each consistent listing is a trust signal.
- Ask for reviews systematically. Text your last 10 customers a direct Google review link. This week. You'll get 3–4 reviews without spending a dollar.
